You don’t have to feel uncomfortable…

There are many reasons why someone might feel uncomfortable talking to a psychology professional. For example, many sections of society have long pushed the message that psychological difficulties equal weakness. Thankfully this attitude is slowly changing, but it remains a big issue. For other people, there's little optimism they can overcome a mental challenge. These are just two of the many factors that block help-seeking.

The elephant in the room is that psychological problems and ‘difficult inner states’ are entirely unavoidable. Life can be tough. You're not imagining this. Just think about the many forms of adversity out there; pandemics, the death of a loved one, cancer, harsh criticism from someone you thought had your back, the expectation to look like a swimsuit model.

It's ok to struggle. Adversity is evidence of being alive, not proof of some character flaw.

Having a positive mindset is fantastic, so long as you don't impose unrealistic expectations on yourself to have the 'perfect life', or assume that you can 'do it if you dream it'.

But few people are brave enough to admit their struggles. I work with many successful individuals who grapple with self-doubt, anxiety, low mood, and illogical fears. They're reluctant to break from the excessive positivity mantra for fear of being singled out as failing in life.

Many of my clients are relieved to stop suppressing their difficulties, and start moving in a more positive direction.

Life is full of ups and downs, but if you feel your life isn't as good as it could be, then talking with someone skilled is worth the investment. Making contact and attending that first session is sometimes the most difficult part of the process.
