Dr Jason Spendelow founded our psychology practice. Along with Matthew Beadman and Louise Deacon, we provide evidence based psychological interventions for many issues.
We are specialists in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). We are also trained in several other talking therapies. These approaches include Mindfulness, EMDR, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT).
We are all registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) as practitioner psychologists. We also hold membership with several relevant professional bodies. These include the British Psychological Society (BPS), the Association of Clinical Psychology (ACP), and the International Society for Coaching Psychology (ISCP). We hold relevant qualifications (e.g., doctorate in clinical psychology) and attend regular clinical supervision.
Treatments Available
We treat a vast range of issues. Examples include:
A range of emotional issues, including low mood and depression
Generalised anxiety disorder and chronic worry
Panic disorder and Agoraphobia
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Low self-esteem
Motivation problems
Feeling ‘stuck’
Specific workplace problems (e.g., leadership issues, difficulties gaining a promotion)
We also have a background in clinical health psychology. We can provide services for people diagnosed with chronic medical conditions. We also cater to those managing physical disabilities and/or the effects of injuries.
Coaching and Clinical Psychologists
Professionals often separate 'clinical' problems from 'non-clinical' issues. A clinical condition refers to a diagnosable psychological condition. Examples include Major Depressive Disorder (Clinical Depression), Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Schizophrenia. Clinical conditions reflect severe problems beyond life's expected ups and downs.
We also know of several non-clinical problems. These difficulties do not have official diagnostic criteria. However, problems such as low self-esteem, perfectionism, and relationship problems can severely impact day-to-day life.
Psychology professionals often focus on treating clinical conditions. However, where does the boundary lie between clinical and non-clinical? The diagnostic approach to psychological distress has been increasingly criticised since classification systems emerged around the middle of the last century.
We believe it is essential to take a flexible approach to categorising psychological difficulties. For example, a problem such as social anxiety can be mild or completely debilitating. It can be more helpful to focus on the things that have led to this problem (and others).
Our team works as both Clinical and Coaching Psychologists. This approach allows us to focus on explaining and addressing psychological problems rather than getting caught up in arguments about a diagnosis. We can also address problems at different severity levels in different environments (work vs home).
