The cost of private CBT
Private CBT
CBT is now used to treat many mental health problems (e.g., anxiety and depression). This approach is also used with physical health problems.
In the UK, there are different options to access CBT.
Public
Some people are eligible to access CBT through the public (NHS) sector. Three possibilities are:
A community adult mental health service.
Other mental health and medical services (e.g., child and adolescent mental health, older adults service) that offers CBT through psychological staff (e.g., CBT therapist) on the team.
IAPT service (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies)
The IAPT system began providing services in 2008. Staff deliver CBT and other evidence-based interventions. You can learn more about all these services on this NHS webpage. Your GP is the best place to start when trying to access these providers.
CBT Private Cost
Many professions outside the NHS provide face to face and online therapy sessions. However, not all talking therapists offer CBT.
Some people can choose to pay for help. The cost will vary depending on the professional. CBT provided by Counsellors and High Intensity Therapists will generally be charged at lower rates than those set by a Clinical Psychologist.
Per session rates tend to be in the range of £50-140.
Some health insurance policies provide cover for talking therapies such as CBT. Practitioners need to be registered with your insurance provider in order to utilise this coverage. There are therapists who offer services on a sliding scale, so it pays to check if you will struggle to fund CBT treatment yourself.
You should also ensure practitioner is an accredited CBT therapist. Look for registration with a major body such as the HCPC or BABCP.
