The Practical Psychologist is an online psychology practice working with people across the UK and globally. Meet the team here or book a free meet and greet now.

We have all trained as Clinical Psychologists. In addition, each of us has at least ten years of experience working with the full spectrum of psychological and mental health challenges. We also work as Coaching Psychologists. This means we have seen (and treated) psychological problems of various severity levels and in many contexts (e.g., work, home life).

Each team member is registered as Practitioner Psychologists with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). We are also members of related professional bodies (e.g., British Psychological Society, Association for Clinical Psychology). Our comprehensive training in clinical psychology is represented by our professional qualifications (e.g., doctorate in clinical psychology).

Dr Jason Spendelow

We have been working in private practice for many years. However, we also have worked in roles in other sectors (e.g., public health, voluntary, corporate).

Jason, our founder, wanted to create a friendly, jargon-free and practical service accessible to all. He took his independent practice online during the Covid pandemic. Jason has since developed this service adding Matthew and Louise to the team.

What is Clinical Psychology?

Clinical psychology focuses on understanding and treating mental health issues and psychological problems. It includes the diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses. Practitioners also assess and manage emotional, behavioural, and cognitive issues.

Clinical psychologists use evidence based practices such as psychological testing, talking therapies, and behaviour change principles to identify and address problems. They work with individuals, families, couples, groups and communities to promote emotional well-being.

What Problems Do You Treat?

We treat a wide range of psychological and mental health problems. These include (but are not limited to):

We use a combination of evidence based psychological interventions to help people reach their session goals. Our primary approaches are:

  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Mindfulness

  • Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT)

  • Compassion Science

  • Strength-based approaches

We also use research from relevant fields to enhance the effectiveness of these treatment models (e.g., neuroscience).

Our philosophy is to use practical strategies in a structured, collaborative format. Our down-to-earth, results driven approach is central to ensuring you have a positive and successful experience with us.

What Can I Expect In Sessions?

We assess each client to understand the core issue or problem. Assessment usually takes between one to three sessions. An explanation of this challenge is developed using psychological thinking and principles. Next, we identify the most suitable intervention plan with our client.

Feedback is then provided, along with a discussion of the recommended treatment plan (including the number and frequency of sessions).

People are sometimes anxious about seeing a Clinical Psychologist. Read our article about this topic if you feel unsure or uncomfortable about taking this step.
